Is Creating A Website A Good Idea For An Engineering Student?

I am currently a Senior in High School, and plan to apply to multiple Software Engineering programs in January. I have an idea for a site, but I think that it would take a while to get it right, and it would take a lot of work and attention.

Seeing as I am applying to an Software Engineering program, I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to start on the site now.

I don't want to work myself to the bone as I will be working 20+ hours a week and going to school full time as well. At the same time, I don't want someone else to think of this idea and get to it first.

Comments and opinions please?

:]
Thanks.

Well this would just be a website, it wouldn't be an app.

Honestly if it is really going to take that amount of time your probably better off doing the things your best at and outsourcing the work to someone else.

It'll be good experience. Naturally after graduating from your degree, and if you ever plan on entering the online programming / development industry, you'll have some experience to add to your resume.

I have to admit though, I am not sure how much work it will be. The idea just came to me not so long ago.

:]
Thanks everyone!

Hi

I think starting a website is great for everybody. Actually, at your age, you could do very well. It always takes time to get things up, running and developed and over time you could have a nice income producing business going for you.

Personally, I recommend using Site Build It because it will help you do the exact right steps so that whatever work you do leads you in the direction you want to go in (in other words, you won't spin your wheels on techniques that don't work, are short lived or will get you in trouble: i.e., black hat methods).

I'm not sure the exact topic you're looking at - perhaps something engineering related? But whatever you do, I would research keywords so that when you create pages you are supplying information that people are looking for. Just making pages is no guarantee they will get traffic, by the way.

All in all, I think this is a great idea and can do nothing but benefit you skills wise, experience wise and if done right, income wise.

Good luck!

If you are aimed at a business. Maybe you could first sell things in web through a platform and have a free online store then latter gradually open your own independent website. Such as in China, we can open our online store for free in TaoBao, we could have our own taobao website and managing it. The layout of the website is already fixed and you don't need more time to do them by yourself. That's good and you may open your self-governed website when you wanna expand your business.
