Depends what you want. If you want high returns and high risk or low return and low risk. Buy some gold or oil shares though the Commodities boom wont be over for a while.

The ideal steps for financial success for young people:
18-21 save as much as you can in a high yield savings account
21-contribute money into your roth ira

In that interval from 18-21 and beyond learn as much as you can about the stock market and then start investing first with index funds, then individual stocks.

This of course is a fairly safe approach.

i did a write up on high yield savings accounts in my blog...the post entitled "cash allocation" has everything you need including current rates to the best of my knowledge. CDs...you might want to stay away from traditional CDs as online high yield savings accounts are giving similar or higher rates than CDs and you still have the ability to use that money if need be whereas with CDs you don't. A site where you can compare rates for CDs and other account options is www.bankrate.com. The blog is in my sig.
