Investing

I am 17 and very interested in investing. I just don't know where to start. Can someone tell me where to start? Also I will have about $1000 to invest, is that a realistic amount of money to invest?

Yes. There is a perfect place to start. Money is going to play a part through out your life so it's worthwhile to learn money management. A small part of that process is called asset selection (a.ka "investing"). A larger part is called asset allocation. These two skills, however, mean very little when compared to the bulk of what money management is about. These most important things are called leverage, tax, discipline and time.

The bottom line is this. If you really want to learn money management, be prepared to study really hard. The subject has been recognised with at least four Nobel prizes, so it's safe to say that money management is a very tricky kind of thing. If you wanna get serious about it- go to business school.

Right! So to answer your question:

Where to start: at the library or with your friendly CFP qualified financial planner.

Is $1000 too little: No. What matters is who much you can contribute monthly- and how consistently.

Well, you could give me the $1000 and i'll start an online based business and you'll get a 100% return of 2k once I get traffic and advertisers.

good, you see the point? entrepreneurs will reccomend going with private equity.

real estate agents will urge you to save for a deposit on an investment property.

an auctioneer will swear by collectables.

stockbrokers will try to get you into stocks and managed funds.

in other words, people do not approach money management as professionals. they will reccomend you anything they've had experience with irrespective of the asset's risk adjusted return profile.

be a pro. understand that money management is proffession and get some qualified advice from your CFP.

Opportunities are everywhere. Acting on them is what seperates entrepreneurs from non-entrepreneurs. There is almost always risk involved as well, but if you arent a little scared, then you arent doing something right!

Best of luck to you.
