    Importing Newbie Question....

    Sorry to perhaps sound stupid.

I am importing two pieces of my product. The first is under production and coming from HK via UPS.

What happens with the tariff/duty? Will the products be held up in California and I will then be contacted about duty?

Do I contact UPS when shipment is going to be initiated and pay them to handle duty?

How does this work? Is there anything I can do to expedite customs clearance?

    Thanks.

What's the quantity...? Typically the shipper should arrange for this unless you have made other arrangements. I'd recommend working with a customs broker on the first few shipments to learn the ropes or talk to UPS. UPS has a customs broker arm. Yes, more than likely it will get held up if you don't have the right paperwork. Although I haven't worked on this in years and did mainly large quantities through a customs broker, I do know that you need a minimum an invoice proving what its worth.

Ok i have been involved in the import/export business. I am not sure why you shipping via UPS. It's really expensive. You should use EMS its cheaper and also easier to pass customs. It only takes 4-5 days. Also they should the goods as gift or samples so you won't have to pay any taxes. Also you need to know that the large the quantity you shipping the cheaper it would be for you. If you ship 2 products the shipping would be very high. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me. I would be happy to help you out

EMS has a weight/volume limit i believe, so if you are importing a size-able amount you cant use it. Anyways, look for a shipping forwarder, they will not only give you an array of shipping options, but if you do decide to use an express air service their rates are half what you would pay if you have the shipped billed to your US import account.
