Ideas for Business Club at school

    Hello,

At my school we have a business club. We are looking at making a short term business, or business related project, at our school which will hopefully teach members about management, delegation, marketing, funding, and execution.

Does anyone have any ideas about how we can incorporate the fundamentals of starting a small business into a project for about 10-15 people?

Should we think of having 2 groups compete?

    Let the ideas flow!

    Thanks
    -Andrew

You should have a trump style competition and have students pitch their ideas.

The students idea that gets voted the best should be project manager.

    Just an idea

reach out to the local business community, preferrably entrepreneurs, and ask for speakers to come speak on a specific topic. you can also look up the "collegiate entrepreneurs organization" and set up a local chapter for you school.

We do have guest speakers come and speak to the members. However, I am looking for something more hands on. We have a stock market competition, through Investopedia.com. However, we would like something that resembled running a business, something like Apprentice as Aletheides said. However, does anyone have any ideas on what in particular we can do?

    Thanks

do a brainstorming session with the club. vote on the best idea. elect a board to run the biz. have the board hire the management and actually run a small biz on campus. look for a need and fill it.

Thanks Global Wealth, I'm hoping to do that. The intention is to do exactly that, find a niche on the campus, however, its a high school, and we don't have as much liberties as a similar club would in a university, being that there aren't many liberties given to students. At a private school, what kind of niche would there be? What would we be able to sell, what would we be able to provide as a service?

    Thanks

    Andrew,

I help teach a business course at a local high school here in Phoenix. There are 15 students in the class and they have formed 7 businesses. The course for them is 5-weeks long and at the end, they will hold a tradeshow to showcase their businesses to the school. It works well when there are only a few students running a business because it helps them to each draw from their specific talents, plus they tend to all agree on what type of business to start. If you have too many trying to run the show or you have a business idea that not everyone likes, then you end up having some students far less engaged and less interested in doing the work.

During my senior year as a marketing undergrad, our capstone course had a competition through a program called Markstrat Online. It was focused on marketing but took into account other business functions as well. My class was roughly 30 people and we split into groups of 3. It is really comprehensive and was alot of fun to compete against the other groups. I couldn't tell you how much it cost, however, so the cost may be prohibitive for a business club.

We have a business week, usually for 5 days at our school where we try to replicate the real world business environment. we have different trading and service firms like food stalls, gaming stalls, insurance companies, real estate companies, banks, warehouse, security, advertising and the teachers and seniors make up a government to regulate the market. There are PLCS too so we have a stock exchange as well. It is made compulsory for most firms to take a minimum loan, insurance, real estate, advertising and trading licenses. The trading is done at break times..the experience is great and we get to learn alot.
