Ideas and Opinions on my New Business

Hi YE,

My name is Chris, and I just restarted my Web Design business two months ago. When I first started I was only 14 so it was not that serious. Now I am serious, I quit my job to run this and so far so good.

I joined Young Entrepreneur to really talk to other business owners, and senior business owners to get new ideas and experience and maybe dodge the growing pains that come along with the learning process.

I have learned quite a few things that I am compiling on a list for my own reference. Eventually I will be flawless with my pitch, and execution. Of course, there is always room for revision.

But most importantly, being a "New" business owner, what is your words of advice. I am offering a product/service of Web Design.

Ideas or Words of wisdom, perhaps?

Thanks!!

For the record: I am 19.

First bit of advice, say what you mean. Try not to leave questions open ended or let them be misleading. I say this because, your title. lol Very misleading. I was expecting a business concept or a link to your portfolio or a plan of some sort to look at.

Your question is a bit broad and it would take literally a book to answer it. My advice, take advice where you can. Always remember that no matter what you know, its not enough. Perfection will NEVER happen. People tend to disagree with this but no matter what you do and how perfect YOU may think you are, the world is not always on the same page. Stay truthful to yourself. If you can't be honest with you, you can't be honest with anyone.

Lastly, you are 16. Do not do what I did and miss out on any of your highschool years because of work or the future. enjoy your sophmore/junior year, which ever you are in. It only comes around once.

Unless you are VERY good at what you do, i would recomend going to a local web designer and talking to them about an internship. Learn and live now while you can. Be a kid.

Good luck with everything.

Enjoy Life,
Nick

Hello Chris,

I am very interested in web design & development as well. The best advice I can give you is seek help where you need it, do not be afraid to ask any questions. You learn that along the way. You can't be the best at everything, hire people where you need to, and learn that it's OK to do that.

As stated above, enjoy your years at high school. Like Future, I did the same thing and was too focused on worrying what I would want to do and become, and my future, and yadda yadda. Enjoy it.

Thanks, for the advice Nick. I am not sure where you got that from but I am 19 and out of high school. There is plenty of time for doing business between my college education.

Chris,

Thanks for your input. I have hired someone on a contract basis and it is a learning experience in itself, but something I dont need to worry about just yet.

It was obviously late and I tend to misread lol I put our two months in as two years and added it to 14 lol I should watch my posts made between 12 and 5am

So 19, advice is still the same except the high school part. And the internship suggestion is even stronger.

Unless you are VERY good at what you do, internship. Learn and have something that you can put on a resume. Some people are not cut out to be entrepreneurs. I dont know if it's for you or not. But in a business like web design, you should really think about learning from others.

Good Luck

Enjoy life,
Nick

Is web design your passion?
Do you wake up every morning saying "dam i can't wait to design websites today"? Do you truly love the art of web creation?
Does your stomach churn with a fiery desire to build a massive web design company?

When you're thinking and planning for your upcoming web design company, do you establish your goals based upon how much money you want right now? Or.....Do you genuinely and sincerely urn to help people in creating website with some sick and unique designs?

Chris,

I forgot to mention one key point:

if your doing web design get a Mac. People will argue, but their is no argument. If your doing more database get a PC more graphic/GUI design get a Mac.

Chris,

Go, do, learn! You're passionate about web design - go do it. You're passionate about starting a business - go do it. There is never a perfect time to start a business because perfection doesn't exist. And you will never know everything about running a business. No one does. It's called trial and error and if you are willing to take the risk and do what you are passionate about, then go and do it. You will learn along with way. Running a business isn't rocket science. You have the motivation and determination to do it and that's half the battle.

My advice is to keep learning from others, whether it's listening to your customers, other business people, or gathering public information. Educate yourself everyday and become the expert in your field. Be willing to take risks and if you make a mistake, pick yourself up and try again. It's all in a days work.
