If you are looking for growth in your investment, invest your money in things that will make your money grow. Try not to invest your money into things that will have you dump more money into it in the long run. Just my personal opinion.

Well if you have a passion for motorcycles start a motorcycle detailing business or just do cars. Easy way to make solid money. Low startup and great upside potential with repeat customers.
Do something you're passionate about. It makes a world of difference to your success.

Sure you can start a business easily off of that amount! I know a 10 year old boy got given a £10 note and used that to buy a cheap laminator and some paper. He then wrote poems for mothers day on the paper, and laminated them. A top supermarket (not sure if Sainsburys are big in the US or whatever, but they are massive here in the UK) then bought his poems for £540, not a bad return for a 10 year old. He used his money to start a small website selling his poems online.

I know that doesn't help you much, but it proves that you can start a business even with the smallest amount of money. My business has been started off of nothing, but I now pay for some small advertisements (but nowhere near $5000) and I'm 19.

    How about this?
Keep saving, get the app developed or the cell phone store...THEN when you have money buy 2 bikes if you want.

It's a decision you have to make. I personally got rid of my "new" car (it was an '08 but I got it new back in '07) to get rid of my payments and got myself a 1,500 dollar truck. No payments. Now I put that $600/mo (including insurance) towards my business. Sure i'm now driving a not so awesome car but I want my business a lot more than a car. I will get a better one later down the road. Probably not even then I will spend money on a luxurious car, they're liabilities. Depreciate wayyyy too fast. I'd rather invest in my business or assets that will give me return and not lose any.

    Hopefully that helped.

If you are at all serious and passionate about starting your business SAVE SAVE SAVE. Do not buy toys now, buy them later when they can actually be toys.

I actually disagree, respectfully of course, with some of these comments. You should limit your liabilities, however, you've also got to have some fun. A few grand on a bike is not that much money... as long as you dont also have jet skis and a nice car, and a boat and a 60" led tv.... We all have to indulge ourselves in some way. Maybe that bike ride in to work every day will be the motivation or relaxation you need work harder. That said, you're also talking a reasoable used bike, not a brand new Ducatti.

I don't remember who said it, but something I read that stuck with me was basically that you shouldn't look at how much something costs, but at what it takes to get it. Don't see that bike as $4000. See it as two major sales, or a months work, etc.

That said I think you asked the right question, you just have to answer some of it yourself. What kind of business can you start now? What are you doing now? Where do you live? What are your passions? Your abilities?

Does the bike have to cost 4000? Can you buy one with problems and fix it? You can find old harleys and hondas for next to nothing that need work. If you're mechanically inclined buy a project and build it up. You'll appreciate it and you'll save a lot of cash.

Also, as for you not considering those things a business... I'd guess more have started out that way than you think. Money is money and you don't have any right now so use the skills you have. Yes, getting started might involve a little bit of inginuity or hustling, but it's a start! You might find a great deal on a bike that needs some tlc. You fix it up and while you ride it list it for sale at a reasonable price. You profit from that while enjoying it and then purchase another project... cycle continues until you've supported your habbit, and possibly even profited from it!

^hmmmm....That's a nice way to look at it. Where he lives depends if he can ride a bike all year around. For me here in the midwest we only get to ride bikes for a few months. Then they have to be stored for the fall, winter and most of spring. But if he can ride it all year he would be saving lots of gas money as well since the prices are so damn high nowadays.

By where he lived I was asking more along the lines of what oppurtunities are available around... I doubt there are too many snowcone stands in Alaska kind of thing!

But your point is very valid. Kansas is the same as chicago, bikes are more toys than transportation. However, with gas prices as they are, a tank of gas is a quarter of decent payment. Save a couple a month and you quickly start justifying nicer cars. IDK how people can afford to drive these old beaters... sure they're paid for, but at 12 mpg youre spending a ton in gas!
