I need advice on a product line

I have two products, both of which are web based applications. I need help thinking of a name - I do not want it to be related to my website name. Basically, the products are the same thing but one has a few more features and costs a little more (okay, a lot more). I was thinking of [product] Basic and [product] Advanced.

The problem here, is I don't want my software to be called 'Basic'. Intiut has a product line of Quickbooks, which has several versions:

- Quickbooks Simple Start
- Quickbooks Pro
- Quickbooks Premier

I don't want my products to be named after an industry, or to be specific to any one(they aren't) so I am thinking about 'Dealer Pro' and 'Dealer Advanced' for product names. Here is the final list of product names I am down to - can you help me decide? (Replace ver with basic, pro, advanced or enterprise depending on what you like - remember, there are only two flavors - basically some & more )

- Co Pilot [Ver] <-- I don't really like this one
- Dealer Advantage [Ver] <-- Would be a mouth full to repeat
- Dealer [ver]

Thanks,

Mitz

speaking of copilot - how about Autopilot? would that be a general non-industry specific name which would sound good?

- Autopilot Advanced
- Autopilot Professional

?

It's 4:37 Am and I can't sleep.

There are numerous terms used to denote a simplified version of a program such as 'lite', 'express', 'vital', 'fundamental' 'elements'. Just experiement with sticking words on the end of your product name. And you can get some good idea using a synonym generator or simply using the synonym feature on MS Word.

It is true that I can use the synonym generator on MS word, but that isn't exactly what I am looking for. When mcdonalds needed a color, they chose red and yellow because it triggers hunger in a persons subconcious. The same could be true if I put something such as 'Basic' or 'Lite' after my product. What if this triggers 'cheap' to the buyer.

Yes... To me "Basic" and "Lite" does trigger cheap. Stay far away from those kind of words.

Well, I want my high end product to be the 'Professional' version - I actually have three products, and the most advanced which links 50+ offices together is the 'Enterprise' version. So I have this:

- Product Name [Any word other than cheap]
- Product Name Professional
- Product Name Enterprise

Any ideas for the low-cost version?

Have you considered leaving off the descriptive word from your basic version? Instead of [product] basic, you could just leave the name [product]. You could then add "premium" to your higher grade product. That way, the product names would be something like "Quickbooks" (which would be the basic version) and "Quickbooks Premium" (which would be your overpriced... err, I mean higher grade....version). Make sense?

I agree with joshw. That was my first though, and then I looked down and seen his post. The basic product should just be the product name... The more advanced products should carry the more advanced name (premium, enterprise, etc.).

I hate the word premium...people automatically think oh ok it costs more, but it doesn't quite explain why...just seems like a notice that this is going to cost you a lot without much benefit to the consumer. Plus the word premium is now so associated with porn that it just doesn't give the right impression
