I understand how designs can be intensive, and the reasons behind it. (I also understand how custom applications blow up a server but that is another story! )

But 6 years ago having a site designed cost that much money. I am just concerned that you are spending way too much on the design. Even the people who charged that much 6 years ago only charge a fraction of that price now.... because they have had to modify with the times.

I am not judging your ability to know what you are doing.. but I suggest you obtain a few quotes before you proceed.

I think 40k is just fine. His business is based online, and a good business sells itself. If you are dealing with the major web development firms, that's what they are going to charge. Big sites cost big money.
