I have an idea to improve a product..

I have an idea to improve or add to an existing product.

I'm not really an inventor by any stretch and my experience is in business, sales, and marketing.

I'm not sure how to move forward with my idea. Not sure how to verify if it exists or is in the works, nor how to protect myself before presenting my idea..

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Please take the time to do US patent search:

Patent Full-Text and Full-Page Image Databases

In my limited time spent working on inventing and developing a new product, doing this has proven to be very valuable.

Will do some reading. Just an overview by description, I don't see it listed.. but I'll read each line, just to be sure.

    What should be next, afterwards?

You can definitely take a look to see if it exists. The main thing to do if it does not exist is to build a prototype. There are many ways to do this, some companies are very inexpensive etc. If you are looking for funding then you will need a prototype etc.

As far as patenting an improvement. good luck! There are alot of reasons why that is a challenging task. Lots of ifs and or buts. My recommendation is to put it our there on ebay and see if you have any takers. If so then start a website and begin feeding traffic from your ebay store to your website. Finally Market!!!!
