I am looking to make some products.

I have a few design for memory sticks that I am looking to start selling. I am looking for a contact, so that I can finalize these designs and then sell them on.

Also how would I go about making sure that nobody can steal my designs.

This is just something I want to do part time and I know I will not make much due to there been so much competition.

The first thing I would do is contact a patent lawyer, at least for advice. I couldn't recommend one to you, but I'm sure there are plenty resources out there. A quick Google search yields some of the following websites that you could possibly use:

United States Patent and Trademark Office
freepatentsonline - this appears to be a search engine for registered patents
How to get a patent guide from the US Patent and Trademark office

As for the manufacturing, consider thomasnet.com, which is a database of different manufacturers you can outsource to. I'm not positive if they have contacts for USB sticks, but its worth a look.

PM me if you need the links, since I can't seem to be able to post links yet .

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, I was actually looking for manufactures in China or something. Where the technology is cheaper. Also for some reason in my mind it will be easier.

    Thanks for the post

    Hey,

A great contact would be tdc.org, or alibab.com. These sites list 1000's of manufacturing companies to help develop your products.

Wow these are some great resources. I'm going to note these down for future projects for myself too.

Quick question, for tdc.org, I get "type directors club" is that right?

Unless you invented the USB device in question, there's no reason to talk to a patent lawyer.
If you're merely making a "skin" to go over a USB storage device, or other similarly existing USB device, there is no patent you can have. They belong to other people already.
The designs themselves are copyrightable though.

Alibaba is indeed your best bet.

I agree a patent would be worthless. Their is no point in having one for a product like this.

as for the buyer, alibaba.com is best choice,
but for seller, i think globalsources.com is better
    also you can try made-in-china.com

also you need a factory, i think the best place is Shenzhen city. they will provide the cheapest price, also they have perfect providing chain in electronical arts. what a pity, i am not good at electronical arts, can not commend one for you.

Hey, I'm doing the same thing as you (in regards to creating my own USB drives and reselling them.) I have already established a reliable supplier over in China (Shen Zhen) and also in Hong Kong.

If you want, you can contact me and I can help you out. Also if you need a designer to design the USB's, I can supply you with that as well. You can find below my USB drives:

You can try some free online business directories too. You will find many online. They will definitely help you in locating manufacturing companies which may help you. These are the great sources for sales lead generation.

The best way of protecting your invention is filing a patent application, utility model or design application. If there are any technical effects or tricks in your new designs a patent might be the way to go. As you may know, your designs should be new and somehow inventive to be patentable. You can consult a website such as patdesk.org (Patent Attorney's Desk) to make novelty searches (try e.g. a "US patent search" and a "European patent search") if you don't find anything that looks like your design, it might be patentable. It would be a smart move get assistance from a patent attorney is you decide to file a patent application.

    Good luck!
