Maybe join some business groups and do some free work for a few people to get your name out? I've seen that happen a few times. I've also seen that on forums and it turned out well for the designer. Have people post what kind of graphic work they want for free, pick one or two and post it on that thread. A lot of people would read a thread "free graphic design." I think Facebook takes longer to develop. You slowly build fans and interact with them so they come back to you for work. You could do a contest on FB though, which will bring you a good amount of fans.
