Question How To Sell Or Transfer A Website ?

    Hi,

I am thinking to sell my site, but I am not sure how is the process of transferring domain together with all the files.

First, I am thinking to just give the password and username to the buyer, but my webhost, hostmonster.com, won't allow me to change my credit card / payment details and owner name.

Should I transfer domain name and files seperately or is there a way to just transfer the whole package at once ?

I saw many of you selling websites at 'selling a website' section. I really need your guide and help.

    Thanks a bunch!

    Try listing on Sitepoint.com

When you sell the site, have the buyer get his own hosting account, then he can do an account transfer through either his webhost control panel, or with the help of his hosting company. That would move all the files, you wouldn't have to do anything. Then have him initiate a domain name transfer.

hi ikjosh, looks like it is another forum site.

i didn't see any page saying about transferring domain and entire files.

i see flippa.com is another place to sell, but i don't think they help to do transfer.

I have sold websites before, sold on Sitepoint.com, I've heard of flippa.com but don't know which has more traffic and more potential buyers.

The webhost would be able to help him transfer the files from your server to his. If it's a linux server, using WHM, you can transfer an account from another server.

If not, then just download all the files, download the database, and then send it to him

To make it easy for you, ask your webhost for help to transfer. some provide it for a charge, some provide for free.

You need to call them and give them your account details (username, password) and also your credit card number, expire date, probably even your name, address and phone number. Then they will be able to transfer it.

You do not want to give out your username and password to someone, since your credit card is on file, they can use it. So they could buy 10 more years of hosting and charge you like $800.

Always, always, ALWAYS do a contract before you initiate the transfer.

You will have to do it seperately. Essentially, you are selling 2 things-the domain name, and the website itself (the files). The person will have to buy a hosting account to load the files up to. You may want to call the hosting company and see what they recommend in respect to getting the files to the new person's hosting account. There is probably a standard way that is used to do this.
