    How to accept CC payments??

I have registered a sole proprietorship in Ontario, Canada. How can I accept credit card payments without using paypal which charges ridiculous fees?

I do not have the greatest credit rating but have never done anything fradulent or had a business fail or anything like that.

    Thank you!

PayPal doesn't have ridiculous fees. Merchant processing fees varies and can roughly be lower or higher than PayPal. It depends on several factors including how much you process, the number of transactions, and obviously you need to shop around. You'll need to also get a gateway if its not through the same company, etc.. If you think PayPal charges a lot, you better hope you're doing a lot of volume because it won't be a whole lot better.

The only alternative I can think of that is lower (although check because I haven't check in awhile so rates may have changed) is Google Checkout.

I use Authorize.net for my ecommerce business but I believe paypal has cheaper fees but if you dont have good enough credit they keep 30% of your transactions as reserves and release it to you in 90 days..which kind of sucks

How much do you process a month on average? If you are doing at least $5,000 a month, I can help you out.

What you need to know about credit card processing is do not pay Qualified, Mid Qualified, and Non Qualified pricing....this is called three tiered pricing. If you are doing $5,000+ a month then I will have you set up under Interchange plus.

Interchange basically = wholesale cost for all banks. So you will pay wholesale cost (interchange is set by Visa/Mastercard every bank, large or small, pays the same interchange) plus whatever basis points I set you up at.

One basis point is 1/100th of a percent.

    I work in this industry....

Hello Ernest. You may be confusing the issue a little for the already confused original poster. You use authorize.net as your gateway provider, not your merchant services provider, both of which are entirely separate entities working in conjunction with each other. In other words, you use authorize.net AND have a merchant account linked to it. The issues with the orignal poster are two: first, if his business is in Canada he needs a Canadian merchant account, which is an entirely different animal from a US merchant account. Secondly, he'll need to overcome the bad credit issues, which is a problem in any economic environment but especially so these days. He might need to settle for an offshore merchant account which would be quite expensive. He might have no alternative but to stick with Paypal, no matter how expensive.

I agree with AMSPCS, they are two different things. Since I'm not based on Canada, I can't really advise much on stuff over there but PayPal will offer the OP the best solution and the rates really aren't that bad. Google Checkout may be an alternative but again, like PayPal, both have their drawbacks. That said, the ideal situation is to find a solutions provider if you do go with one, that perhaps can offer a gateway and a merchant account under one house.

Some places will charge fees for both separately because in most cases they are separately provided but some providers (such as select banks) will have their own gateway and thus waive or have lower fees for providing both. And if you shop around, you can get quote matches usually which will be in your favor. In my case, I did exactly that and was able to get a dedicated rep as well in my local area where I had access to her 24/7 via her cell phone which made it extremely useful in times you need something. Also, I'm not sure if its different for other merchant services but the one I ended up using due to the favorable terms offered virtual merchant which was an online merchant account versus a physical terminal so we didn't have to pay some of the fees the typical brick and mortar store required.

At the end of the day you're going to have to shop around and find out what the best solution is because there are literally hundreds if not thousands of providers out there. Although given your current situation, I seriously believe that PayPal and Google Checkout are your best solutions at this point.

That has nothing to do with this thread and you're simply just spamming multiple threads with the same message.

I've been using PayPal for all credit card transactions. I'm satisfied so far. Not to stray off topic, but do any of you use mobile cc processors? I want to know which is the best for blackberry

Dear Light--with all due respect, if you think Qb is well priced, you haven't shopped around very much. Their base monthly fee is 2-3 times what virtually everyone in the industry charges, and their percentage fees are a good 20-30 basis pints above industry averages. Even worse, they are 'jhostage marketers', meaning they deprive their users of all choice and pricing leverage by (a) forcing them to pay constant update fees and (b) rigging their program so that it only works with THEIR add-ons and peripherals, all at grossly inflated prices. Don't get me wrong--QuickBooks is a superior small business accounting program, but one of the worst payment processing programs on the planet.
