How much would this cost?

I plan on designing an online site similar to the way half.com works except for a different market. In the future I will go to a coder auction site, but for now I'm wondering how much it will cost me to have someone build this. Of course it will have to include the essential features that make half.com so easy to use such as payment from credit card, deposit to sellers bank account twice a month, 10% to website when a sale is made, searching by isbn number, feedback/reviews, categorize each unit by condition, and seller stores allowed.

I suppose it would be smart to have them setup the search engine optimization as well.

So what would a site like this cost?

I'm also curious as to how much a setup like this will run. I've always thought about it but never did any research nor do I see myself getting into an online field anytime soon even though it always ran through my head. Insight anyone?

IMHO Thats a conservative estimate if you want it done in the USA (english coder i mean). This kind of project would take an individual coder like me years to finish, so you are most likely going to be looking for a team.

Your right, that is a very conservative estimate. At first i said 50-100k and then i changed it to 30-50k but either is reasonable.

I'm no expert, so I give this advice not understanding why it can't work.

Get a php site up, like e107 or something, and then incorporate a script for auctions. This will probably not be the final incarnation of your site, but it will get you started and you'll know better how to "talk website" to your future programming team.

It will also keeps your costs down while you learn internet marketing. Don't dump 100K into a project unless you have tested the waters, and a simpler site will do that for and tiny fraction of that cost. While your at it, check out host-something.com, they are pretty reasonable on pricing and very attentive on customer service.

The earlier postings are all right.
But if you start with more standard sofware (more Open Source), I think the costs will be around $ 10.000.
If you want it custommade, the costs will be much higher.
If you are interested I can make an more detailed estimation.
I do need however a little more information.
Just contact me if you need more inf at rberg@ten-ants.nl

I'm just looking at estimations right now... It is essential that this business be similar in nature to half.com in that it is very easy for visitors to use. The type of market I'm going into will require such an infrastructure to make this work. Is this too big of a project to find a team at one of those script auctioning sites?
