how much traffic ?

ok guys, totally new to internet ventures but I have a website set to launch on jan 2nd. would prefer not to go into specifics but i am at the moment only interested in building site traffic. the service i am providing will be free to users. it was a service that i myself was actually in need of and was suprised that there was no website out there that filled this niche. my aim is to make money eventually from advertising, be it adsense or whatever. my question is what should my goal be as far as unique hits a day go so that i know when i might have something. Ive heard that if your getting 2,000 unique hits a day then you can start to expect some income from advertising. is this correct ? also if I reach 2,000 uniue hits a day in 6 months would that be something to be excited about, or is that average or maybe even not so good ? any stats or statistics that i should be shooting for here would be greatly appreciated. obviously you want all you can get but when will i know im doing well ? if these questions sound a little green, well like i said im new at thiis. thanks in advance for any responses.

Hey well done getting out there and making sometthing happen. Filling those niches are definitely important and an be profitable. Unique visitors are important but more so page views or CPM meaning earnings you will make for every 1000 page views. You can also earn money on a CPC cost per click. Your questioned answered say those 2000 visitors a day are clicking through an average of 3 pages each which is 6,000 page views
Say you have 4 ads up on a page. I like to use facebook's ad cost as the going rate because its conservative enough so I bought an ad for 65 cents for 1000 impressions the other day! Very cheap because the market is crap and facebooks ads are nothing great. Lets do the math is this was your site with the assumptions I drew up

6,000 page views x 3 ads= 18,000 impressions

1 CPM= 1000 impressions

18 CPM's x .65 cents = (per day) $11.70

Per month= $351.00

Per Year= $4212
