How many of you have gone to university and completed it?

I was just curious, how many of you guys here have gone to university and completed the programme and achieved a degree of some sort?

When you finished that did you go straight into setting up your own thing or did you get some work experience in the field first?

Me personally, I did my degree from a university in London - 4 year programme which included a 1 year intern job.

I am 23 now having graduated last summer and I work as a Web/Graphic Designer for a marketing firm in downtown London. On the side I do my own freelance web designing however my mind is not just into the Web Design game and I am currently working on setting up a summer school for students from abroad.

So so far, I'm balancing work with my own work. 9-5 is my job - when I get home, I do my own hustle and weekends are for my own hustle again.

Cool Tau - I always wonder if it was worth it or not - like you read a lot of guys who start their own things and do well havn't actually gone to university...and then they have like a 4 year head start on people like me who do go to university...but then I do believe in the long run, it is the better option

It's worth it for the parties and the social life,

Its stacks of fun, and its always better to have a qualification in life.

Well from my experience - social life and all, it's cool but I don't think it is "worth" it for that

It's worth it for the long run, having a degree under your belt

You don't need a university to teach you or experience social life lol - my opinion or thought from my experience. I finished my university just under a year now but I stil go to stacks of parties every other day but not with any of my university friends, just...random people you meet so I'd disagree there.

The main worth it factor is the qualification.

But that's not my question, I'm going off track - more like has anyone done it and where are they now having spent 3/4 years in uni

It's funny - so far in the short replies, we have two people who have gone straight for saying it's worth it for the "social" side of it

Bypassing the real reason one goes to a university and that is to gain a globally recognized qualification

I beg to differ - you really don't need to have a university to help you socialise unless you are really..just not good at meeting new people or something

since I started my first business when I was 15 and my second when I was 18 I already had a little bit of knowledge about business and I already knew what I wanted to do. I started going to college when I was 18 with the plan of getting a business admin degree, but after about a year I dropped out just because I wasn't learning what I needed to learn to accomplish what I want to accomplish. I have learned and will continue to learn in the real world much more than they could ever teach at a college.

It all depends on what your goals are. You might need a degree, a degree might help, or a degree might not make any difference.

I would highly recommending attending college and graduating. First and foremost, the notion that you don't have to go to college to be successful is true. However, I would say that your chances dramatically increase because of your general knowledge being expanded and the people you meet.

You might say, "they don't teach me what I want to learn." Well, learn what you want on your own time. Taking courses you didn't want to take will expose you to many things that will serve you well later on in life. You are a more well-rounded person and people will give you more immediate respect making it easy for you to sell them widget XYZ.

Not going to college is a serious gamble. Of course, you could say you dont get anywhere without taking a risk. Well, why dont you take your risks after you get your degree so that you have something to fall back on.

Just my take. Every situation is different and I can certainly understant a situation where college may not be your best choice.

I agree with JP 100%. More often then not, not going the college route when you have the opportunity is a pretty silly gamble. If nothing else, if your plans fail quite badly, you will have something else to fall back on in case you need to go the employee route. Which I think is a necessary contingency plan in the entrepreneurship world.

Education has certainly become more available. You can access many opportunities through online and correspondence education while gaining your experience.

After I graduate from FSU, I plan on getting an internship at a hotel/resort and then seek a full time position elsewhere.
