it is not essential for a business to be taken seriously. I do most of my product shopping in brick and mortar stores, however i do a little research on the web before spending $200+ so if you dont have a site you lose the potential sale.

Also with outsourcing the cost of creating a website is minimal, and they are open 24/7 so why would you not want to have one?

Maybe people aren't responding because it is a poor question. It's like asking if you can go outside for a walk without an umbrella when it is pouring rain. You can, but it doesn't make much sense and it's kind of a dumb question.

Of course you can have a successful business without a website. But, in today's environment, and considering the low cost of establishing one and near universal expectation that a business have a website, not having one is an undefendable position if you want your business to maximize its potential.

I'd like to add my own vote to the poll above:

* Absolutely imperative to business success (some industries/business models excluded) unless the website is crap and never updated, then it is absolutely a waste and possibly a detriment to the business

I know you would have made that one of the options but it was too long to fit in the text box when making the poll. Not your fault.

I think it depends on your product and service you're offering. I sell most of my perfumes and aromatherapy products online, so having a good, secure website is VERY important. Most of my customers and stockists initially find me through search engines. I think if you offer a service or a product that needs to be visualised, then having a website can be a valuable investment.

On the other hand, if you were a trades person, having a personal website won't be as important than advertising in local newspapers, yellow pages and online directories.

Care you expand on your rather vague comment not directed specifically at anyone?

Of course! It doesn't need to be a large, complcated site. A simple web site or blog can be put together very quickly and inexpensively.

if you can get a basic sight made for $100, you must not be taking your business seriously not to have one

I would rather have no website then a bad one

I think if you are a services company that for professionalism I would recommend a website, but not every company needs one. I mean the local independent fast food store in the shopping centre doesn't really ( i mean they could make great use of one, but having one would have no impact on how they were perceived)

Well I disagree with that because my business is almost completely online. I think it is extremely important for any business to have a website these days though.
