How does YE advertising work?

Forgive my ignorance (I am here to learn as well as help others), but can somebody explain how YE advertising works. Start to finish.

Are you referring to the AdBrite ads? (The text ads across the top of each page.)

The whole sha-bang. This site seems to be a fairley succesful forum, with advertising being one of its main forms of income, so I am hopeing to understand how they do it, or how it works (I am defenetly a novice when it comes to this).

Basically you sign up to a Ad's system e.g. Adsense, Bidvertiser or Adbrite and you place the ad's on your website and people click on them, i have them on my business forum and energy drink site (see in my sig)

People make alot of money through this if there sites popular (ie YE)
