How do YOU reward good employees?

Why is it that the employee who is on time every day, never calls in sick, works to the fullest potential each and every day is treated the same as the person who randomly calls in sick, shows up late, has a bad attitude in the work environment (not to mention wrinkled clothing and bad appearance)

Nothing separates the two employees when it comes to vacation time, pay raises, or anything of that matter! It went on for so long that our good employees started to care less if they went above and beyond because at the end of the day they are treated the same as the average or not so average employee.

What can be done to reward or make the good ones stand out from the management side?

Are you asking this on the side of you being owner or in charge of employees?

If so then keep strict track of employee records and every 3 months reward with something. Like here is a $10 gift certificate to blah blah for arriving to work early everyday. Or give them a paid day off or something, let them know you care, and tell them to get it up and they will be promoted.

If you are asking from the employee side, you can keep track of your own records and every few months give the reports to owner/management. Many times the management doesn't even know about an employees track record. Then it would be up to them to decide if they want to do something for you, or care less.

Question: why are you keeping less-than-stellar employees on your team in the first place? It seems that's your real problem.
