How do you reduce the risk posed by bad weather?

In the UK this past week, we've had snow, ice and freezing conditions affecting the postal services, the road, the telephones...

With the snow still falling the temperatures continuing to plummet, the entrepreneurs at The Business Reality Website | inafishbowl.com are carrying on as best they can. However, Mike and Bea of betterlanguages.com have raised an interesting question...

How can you mitigate the risk posed to business by bad weather? What provisions do you have in place to ensure your business can carry on whatever the weather?

This is a rather difficult question since there are many factors to consider.

It depends on the type of a business. But you can't really plan 100% for natural disasters and such. If tons of snow fall one day and roadways don't get cleared, as a result workers cannot get to work on time, and trucks cannot deliver the merchandise on time... It is all a risk...
A fisherman will know how to avoid bad weather and plan ahead to fish on days that are good for fishing... and bad weather days...

In the days when technology is much more advanced perhaps some work can be done at home (such as the services Mike and Bea of betterlanguages.com offer). It all again depends on the type of a business.
