I think marketing would be the main principle. Of course, having a extremely user friendly and effectively coded site helps. So I guess it's a combination of the two.

I heard (and could be wrong) YouTube although very popular with people, is a black hole in terms of money needed to keep it operation. it has never posted a profit and the numberes are kept secret for this reason.

The huge cost for bandwidth and server space has put Google in a difficult spot. Research this and consider it before launching such a site.

Its very simple to make a website like youtube but it is very difficult to make it as popular as youtube.
