How do you get from an idea to a product?

I was wondering, how exactly does someone with an idea for a product go forth in starting a business around it?

What's the first step in inventing something, and where does one go from there?

I feel like I've had some good ideas, but I've just never known where to go with them. Thanks for any advice

Depends on how you plan to sell your product...online, brick and mortar shop, licensing, wholesaling to other retailers.

In my blog (go through my website below) I started posting about someone that I was taking step by step through the process of getting her product to market. I discussed in detail exactly how to set up the business around her product. Check it out.

I always thought it was:

You have an idea, take it to a design firm, get a prototype, start mass producing
