They probably met a Nigerian who was looking to move money

In all seriousness though, your question is too vague.

Those teens who 'got rich' are the exception, not rule, and they did it by creating a website that got big, real big, and having an audience that big means the site has a high value to potential buyers. They could have also monetized it in some way, for example with ads.

Can you be more specific? What are you trying to do?

Mid 90s, I was 14. I began trading a certain alternative rock band's T-Shirts, posters and other useless paraphernalia to a group of online friends (at that time, a mailing list). Granted, E-Bay didn't exist back then, and we even had our own private list of "bad traders" instead of the traditional feedback. To this day I'd love to go back and learn from myself those secrets.....

I believe that, broadly answering to a broad question, it is the fact that teens don't have to worry about money, they just love it, and so they love whatever they might be into at the time. When you couple virgin ambition with true love (fandom), you've got a recipe for success....
    I guess..

Well most of the time its not huge sums of money, but a lot of it might be affiliate marketing. It seems, the first thing most people get involved in, that follow the entrepreneurial path, is affiliate marketing.

As far as I understand, Kids build website about something that they interested in, then put someway to monetize it. It can be market service as affiliate, or put special section for advertising so they can ge the money from it.

No they don't put something in to monetize it.. and that IS EXACTLY why they end up making money. They don't care about making money from the beginning so rather than worrying about ways to monetize their projects before they're even successful, they just build them up to great proportions and eventually when their ideas become popular THEN they start to find out how to monetize them.
