    Exclamation Hookah Bar

Wondering if anyone can exchange information on opening and running a successful Hookah Bar? I am just want to gather some information for personal use. I am currently thinking about doing this project for my self. I wanted to know about current California Laws on opening an establishment. Any other information like pricing, inventory, and structure feel free to list some advice.
Thanks for anyones help on this.

I live in LA right now and I personally hang out at hookah bars and was about to open one myself!

It is not an easy business! Although I do sense that if a new one opens up in the area it would be a nice hot spot because tithe rest of them are way tooo crowded!!

The trick to successful hookah cafe is to treat your "GOOD" customers GOOD!

There is a cafe here that I called at from the day it opened! A couple months after this place opened it was one of the hottest places in the community... about 2 years the owned got greedy and started razing the prices and then started having a minimum order thing! So we stopped going.. Shortly after he had to sell!

If the community likes you, you WILL be successful! If you have nothing that appeals to them, you will crash and burn!

We had one here in South Jersey(Voorhees), it was doing ok, but it closed in less than a year.
I personally think that the issues were: the space/price/turnaround. Small store would fit about 20 ppl inside. People sit there for hours while spending $5/head which is nothing. Think about it carefully.

    Shaun, PM me.

I am in the same boat as you. What I find rather ridiculous is the amount of inquiries on this site regarding the establishment of a hookah bar in or around the So Cal area. It seems to me that our generations of young adults have witnessed this bolstering fad, and want to try and get a piece of it. I truly believe that young entrepreneurial minded people like us underestimate the amount of work that goes into something like this. Regardless, I have done a ton of research on this field and I can pretty much conclude that the hardest part of establishing a hookah bar in California are the laws and licenses restricting this type of establishment. I have already heard rumors of the state cracking down on hookah bars, and apparently they shut down every single hookah lounge/bar in Ventura County. I am currently in the process of meeting with city officials and trying to obtain a code amendment, granting me the approval for this project. However, the more research I do, the less likely it seems like they will approve my application. It seems like there is too much of a negative connotation associated with a hookah bar.....

What area of LA were in you interested in starting up? The only college town area that I have yet to find a hookah bar in close proximity too is the downtown/USC area....

What’s really depressing to me is that I am 100% certain this endeavor would be extremely profitable. If I told you the location in southern cali that Im trying to get into you would understand (beach town with strong nightlife – avg. age 21-30, and no hookah bars within 20 mile radius!!!!)

The only thing holding me back is the CITY!!!!!

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT I SHOULD DO??? – just a 21 year old college student with a passionate belief!!!

    Wink

There is a hookah bar really close to the campus of the University of Oklahoma, but that is in Norman, OK. Don't know how profitable it is but I will see what I can find out and post it here.

My buddy just sold his Hookah bar in Long Beach: http://www.myspace.com/exhalecafe

Good outfit. The only thing that he really misfired on was acquiring a beer / wine license that would've absolutely BLOWN UP his profits.

    Cheers,
