    Help With Online Mother Store

Hey all. I dont know if you can help me but I am really hoping that someone can..

I am looking to start an online Mother/Baby website.. Catering more to the trendier mother. I recently had my third child (I am young mother only 28) I was really depressed looking for cool maternity clothes or trendy baby clothes . I am looking to add trendy diaper bags, gift baskets catering to the styled mother and child. I would like to carry the following items.

    Diaper Bags
    Maternity Clothes
    Baby clothes
    Baby booties
    Newborn toys
    Stuff for new mothers
    Lotions
    Perfumes
    Jewlery

I also am looking to add possibly live chat from the site.

Basically I need help from soup to nuts. I know what will sell but I need to know where to find it and how to start.. IF anyone knows please get back to me asap.. Thanks so much

    Jamie

My suggestion, if you can afford it,

Take a trip to certain places in China, find factories that deal with the products you want, get them to make them to your specs, import them when done and wallah!

Otherwise do the same through internet, although you will find much less trustworthy companies through that method.

    That could be a start.

The first step is finding the exact products you want. From there, determin who the manufacturer is and contact them to see what channels they distribute through. Do they do their own direct sales, do they use distributors, do they only sell to qualified stores (some places won't sell to online stores), etc...

JSsaunders, do you know where I can get a grouped manufacturers list? Perhaps a way to search for all "infant clothing designers"? Thank you so much for your advice this has given me a great place to start..

Unfortunately I am not familiar with this industry. However, if you are interested in scrapbooking products for new mothers, then I could help you. My business sells a wide variety of scrapbook related products, including kits for mothers to scrapbook their babies and children.

    Greetings Jamie,

Good idea, and as you had discovered, this is an under served market. My daughter in law saw the same thing and just opened a so called chic maternity clothes and baby clothes to serve same market as you have identified, so there is a need for specialty shops like this.

What they did is tie it in with natural child birth and nursing classes to define their niche more accurately. They attract the mother to and current new mothers with free classes, and then by the way the clothing line. She also only offers name brands made in USA only, so this is not a bargain basement approach like many will take. It is all about the trend away from import garbage, especailly with issues with made in China products this past year, so consider the alternative, made in USA sells, especially with declining dollar.

    Good luck, Mike

    Hi Jamie,
I am a young mother as well I'm 30 and on my third!! I'm from Los Angeles and we have a variety of kids clothing boutiques. I'm not sure where you are from but it is wise to go to shows that manufactures, designers attend like magic in Las Vegas and market weeks in Los Angeles and New York. This is where all the show rooms that house these designers allow buyers to go in and put in there orders for there stores. I think to start off it is a good idea to contact the company's directly. A lot of the trendy clothing lines are small companies that run out of there houses or at small locations. A great resource is Daily Candy.com you can get a lot of info from this site. I can recommend a couple of kids and diaper bag designers. Let me know and good luck!!!!!

    Hi Jamie,

My friend has just opened a chic maternity store in Australia. Instead of sourcing materials from China, she sourced things from independent designers on etsy.com and madeit.com.au. There are a lot of beautiful handmade unique items for babies and pregnant women. She would contact the seller and would purchase the items at a discount, or have the items displayed in her store on consignment.

Good luck with your idea as I think it's great!

    Hey Jamie...
We own a teen clothing store, but make and sell our own "Punk" baby clothes (onesies, and toddler tees), which are very in style right now, especially for younger moms (I would know, 23, with only 1 for now). Send me over a PM if this would be something you are interested in.
