Help a newbie with $20,000 dollars

Hi guys, I recently inherited $20,000 from my deceased Uncle (God bless his soul.) I am new to this kind of stuff and don't really know what I am doing. Basically, I want to invest this money into SOMETHING - anything really that will at least help it grow.

    Any help?

I am a producer for a feature film. We are low budget and looking for funding. With an investment of 20k that should pay for most of if not all of post production for the film. For more info email me at kaiwho@gmail.com. We are thinking 125% ROI probably. So when the film is finished and in theaters, you would get about $25,000 + Thank you credits at the end of the movie. You would be allowed on set from time to time to check things out if you are local.

Thanks 5poundstore and Kaidea. I am considering (and will most likely) investing a percentage of my money into both of your projects if no one else has any suggestions.

    Cool. Any amount helps.

Our overall budget we are shooting for is 150k and however much you invest helps us out and makes you money.

Do your due diligence before parting with any money. Don't go by what people tell you but look into the financials of the operation, track record of previous successful projects (if any) as well as credit worthiness of the people you are dealing with and always make sure whatever you agree upon is in writing with a personal guarantee the individuals you are giving the money to will pay you back if things go south. Good luck!

Anyone who tells you to invest in them is not here to help you, but is here to help themselves... That said, I could use 20K

Seriously though, there are a lot of small ventures to be started with 20K and a lot of safe investments to be done with 20K. No offense to the movie guy a couple posts up, but that is an extrememly risky investment and for only 25%?! An angel backing his movie would want multiples, not percentages. Theyd want to turn their 20K into 100+, or not take the risk.

These questions are rhetorical if you are not comfortable answering them on here. They are primarily to get you to think, and if you want to post the answer i'm sure people can chime in to genuinely help:
    • What do you do now?
    • What is your education in?
    • What do you have experience doing?
    • What are your passions?
    • How much risk are you willing to take?
    • How much time/effort are you willing to put into it?
    • How much debt do you have?
    • Do you have a savings account?
    • What are your goals for life? the next five years?

Answer those and you'll start to make a path for yourself. Want low risk and little time invested? Look at safe investing, cds/mutual funds, things like that. Up for starting a venture and have lots of time? Then it's time to look at your passions and see what you can get going. If you have lots of debt and/or no savings, then it is probably a smart idea to use at least a portion to pad your own financials. Again, without knowing anything about you it is hard to give any solid advice, which is why my advice is to do some reflection, draw out your goals, and then we can talk about what's next.

    Hope that helps

i started a small bakery and need funding but i am going to tell you this before you invest into anything at all you need to research it all first dont make a mistake and invest in something that sounds great and turns out to be a flop. people can talk a good game but may not be good to invest in. make sure you are going to make your money back and then some so the investment pays off. and then i wouldnt invest the whole amount either.

Invest it in real estate or stocks, or why not create your own business? eCommerce stores, or online businesses are cheap.

2k8bomb, you say you don't know what your doing, yet you want to invest in complete strangers?! are you mad?. No offense.

There is A LOT more to investing in a business then just:

you --> "oh, here is 20,000 dollars, now do you promise to pay me back?"

otherguy --> "Definitely!. you'll make a 5,000,000% return on your money!"

    you --> "ok cool, sounds good. Here's a check for 20 G's"

There is a complex process to this and I don't even know where to start... all i can say is, you dont know what your doing, and people on this forum now know that and will take advantage.

Call merrill lynch ( a wallstreet broker) and talk to them about investing in something conservative.

you definitely want to be careful with that money that is way to much to hand off to someone over the internet.
