Despite what the advertisements may say about being able to work at home, make a lot of money and not requiring any experience, not everyone is capable of operating a home business. It takes a special personality to work for yourself and even more so if the business is based from home. Distractions are more likely when your office is situated in a spare bedroom or at the dining room table, and there will be times when friends and family will interrupt you at work.
When you work outside the home, chances are no one is going to bother you on the job. They understand that you have a job to do and the people you work for may not appreciate you being interrupted by non-work related distractions. However, when you work at home, many people forget that you are working and you will have to remind some of them more than once that although you are at home, you are still working. Additionally, your boss, that is the clients that you are working for, will not appreciate distractions that prevent the work from getting done on time. It not only takes self-confidence to be able to work at home, knowing that you are good at what you do, it also takes self-discipline to establish a work schedule to make sure the jobs you promise to other get done when you promise them to be done. A good television show or movie, or heading out to the golf course or favorite fishing hole on a sunny day can all serve as distractions. Since most of the interruptions would not be present if you worked for someone else outside the home, you have to have the same discipline working for yourself inside the home. Although you probably will be able to establish your own work schedule, the number of hours you spend working should become part of an established schedule. For example, if you are home alone throughout most of the day, your work hours should be set during that time. There will be less interruptions and your family can know you are working while they are and will be available for them when you get off work. With that in mind, you will want to make sure that whatever line of work you get into at home is something you like to do. Otherwise it is just a job and you will find yourself creating your own distractions. There will always be something that needs to be done around the house that is much more interesting to do than what you are being paid to do and it will not take long before you have no business and no clients. Understand, it is OK to pat the dog or cat on the head on your way to the coffee pot or at lunchtime when you make lunch in your own kitchen. However, allowing other people or other chores around the house to get in your way of completing any assigned tasks is te quickest way to put yourself out of business.
