Google VS Bing - Bing adjoins Facebook

Bing announces that they deliver better search results for its users. A threat to Google, since Bing would use 500 Million Facebook users niche data to enhance its search results. Bing announced that with this update it would work more like a social search engine.

What do you think? Can this be really a threat to Google? Can results dedicated to social search make a major difference in the internet space, after considering the fact that Facebook recently outperformed Google?

    Thank you for responding.

Good question... I've been watching all this pretty closely. Most people don't comprehend that Facebook is now the second largest search engine on the net in terms of searches. There is still an issue with privacy. Facebook does not protect peoples data in a fair way. This is why they are constantly in court. What I mean is Facebook has access to all of your personal data because you give it to them. They are not stealing it nor are they illegally using it. What they are doing wrong is they are not giving the users full rights to protect their own personal data and then they are profiting from your data's use.

This was in the WSJ yesterday. I bring this up only because if Bing is going to use FB Data extensively they are going to be subject to the same legal woes that FB now faces. This could be a hindrance. All of these companies have a ton of money and a bunch of smart people working for them. I just see a lot of hurdles ahead for them.

Will Bing be a competitor? I actually hope so... well at least in the way that would drive down advertising costs. If that could happen I'd be all for this.

WOW! Thanks for posting this. Yeah I totally agree that the new partnership does have some serious implications for Google moving forward. Microsoft is trying really hard to get back into the game ASAP due to its decline in popularity and product innovation. Google seems to have stolen that a long time ago with its slew of products but this really has the two companies clashing against each other. Social data is definitely very valuable and better than any other metric out there for the most part when it comes to searching and targeting. Good luck and let's see how this works out!

Thanks for sharing your view points. But don't you think Google and Facebook as an entity works altogether for different purpose? Google is a dedicated Search Engine with a Database of websites whereas Facebook is a networked database of people. Even though Bing & Facebook adjoins, perhaps I am not sure what can they conclude together?

    Finally..some competition

I have been waiting for Google to be challenged. FB posed a threat and now Bing appears to be a possible threat too. Maybe Google will get off their high horse and start responding to people's questions when they cancel their Google Ads accounts.

I think this competition will be great for the end users and advertisers!!

Ha! They'll never do it. I saw an interesting statistic for Google

Monthly Ad Spend under $1000 = 86% of Google Advertisers
Monthly Ad Spend over $1,000,000 = 0.2% of Google Advertisers

Percentage of Income from Users under $1000 = < 1%
Percentage of Income from Users over $1,000,000 = 23%

So 23% of their income comes from 0.2% of their advertisers. I think if you spend over $100,000 a month you get an assigned rep who you can call when ever you have a problem.

When searching the internet for information, no one wants Facebook profiles, unless they are looking for information on a person. Microsoft still doesn't have what it takes. It's very obvious. Microsoft has been trying to get a piece of the search engine market for over a decade, because they know how much it can do for their marketing and having all that data at their fingertips, not to mention marketing revenue. They've been trying to buy Yahoo for years - I believe $50 billion was the last offer. Though they have enough money to get into the game themselves they do not have the knowledge of technique needed, or the PR friendly company name, hence the Bing name change. Did I mention, Microsoft does not listen to it's users, and that's what Google did well to make it to the top? Microsoft is better suited taking over the database world by acquiring Oracle, who have the same ideals as they do.

    My Thoughts

    A few things

If bing intends for the searches to happen within facebook, than I dont see how they can profit from that.

If they intend on incorporating the social relevence within bing.com results, that is only worth something for visitor who use bing to search. Which is not much.

I can say this, I dont see myself leaving google to take my search quirys elsewhere. Like others have said, competition is always good. We shall see

    I dont expect anything radical
