As mentioned there are many tutorials, but after getting the basic grasp of SEO, I recommend that you stick to reading newer articles on the subject as there is a lot of movement in area. What was good yesterday, might be useless today.

Could you tell us what you actually need it for?

I agree with mojuu that you need to make sure you are reading recent, up to date articles. Even this year so many little things have changed. Google had previously announced that social networking links would not be considered in ranking but they announced a few months ago that it now is so it is a constantly changing subject.

If you want to learn SEO so one day in the future you can optimize sites for yourself or for paying customers, there are a ton of resources out there. If you want to learn SEO so you can optimize a site you own NOW, skip it and hire someone who already knows it - time is money, and while you are "learning" trying to save money you could instead be paying someone and making sales.

One important thing - use PPC as a way of testing what keywords convert before you jump into SEO. Good SEO takes a lot of time, and what keywords you optimize for is important. You don't want to waste months crawling to the top for keywords that drive traffic but don't turn into sales. Set up a Google AdWords account to test all of your keyword ideas, see which ones make you the most money, then go optimize your site for those words. If you need help with this, I have people who can manage these campaigns for you just let me know.

What I did was read a lot of articles about SEO and spent a lot of time trying new things out.

It helps if you have a website to work with. See what search terms work best for you and see if you are reaching your target audience with them.

    Good luck!

Whilst you do have a point, learning some basics of SEO will be useful so you know the freelancer is doing the right job. A lot of people don't properly understand SEO and expect a freelancer to achieve instant results. Of course, it takes time, sometimes a lot of it, and they could be doing completely the wrong techniques for your site.

I've recently started my own SEO company and I have read a lot of books and online articles about the subject. I found Search Engine Optimisation for Dummies the best. I learnt the most the quickest from it. You'll be able to improve your site after reading the first couple of chapters or so.

Sign your site up at google.com/webmasters

It will tell you what pages have been indexed, what key words google considers relevant to your site.

SEO tips - write down key words you think people will search on to get to your site. Put them in your titles, content, and graphic alt tags. Put a copyright statement at the bottom of your site and put a couple of key words with it. Write unique content. Don't copy.
