Good resources for internet business

Hi all,

first of all I'd like to say that this is a great forum - I've been reading the stickies and everything makes a lot of sense!

I am thinking of starting an internet business - its loosely based on a social netowrking principle.. can anyone please suggest good books or online resources that I can read on how to go about starting up an online business (if possible specific for social networking?)

I've looked on Amazon and there are way too many books that promise wealth etc with decent reviews so I'm not sure which ones are good and which ones aren't

Any advice is much appreciated!

What do you mean by social networking-based online business? Is it something that has to do with setting up a social networking site like Facebook and MySpace?

If so, I don't think there are any books out there that can specifically help you with that. It will be entirely up to your ideas. Basically, you need to come up with the market that you wish to serve and the functions that you want to include in the social networking site.

After coming up with the idea, you need to check whether there is an off-the-shelf script. If there is none that suits your idea, perhaps it's time to hire a freelance programmer to do the job for you. However, the latter may be more expensive.

Any idea on how to go about finding a good desinger/developer?

Doing a generalised google search for designers and developers brings up way too many companies and professionals - I don't know where to start from and who to choose

Do you recommend just finding a few with decent portfolios and then getting quotes? Should I make sure they live in the same country or is that not a problem?

I'm not sure where to start from since I don't have any contacts as regards website design and development

My employer is an internet law attorney. He has also put out a DVD called Legal Considerations for Starting and Online Business. The DVD is full of information on how to go about this process. It can be purchased for $94.95 either through our firm, Craigslist or Amazon.com.
