    Exclamation Giving "ADVICE"

You know, it's pretty interesting to browse these forums and see the "justifiable" advice that some people are giving. It seems like a ton of people, most notably those not in a position to do so, are trying to give "good advice" on things they know absolutely nothing about.

If you're not a lawyer or experienced in the legal area, why give that 'advice'? Then, when someone calls you out - you get pissed off. I understand we're working with a lot of kids on here, because it's YE - but come on guys. If you've never even started a *real* business venture, who are you to give advice on how to start-up, and things to watch for? Did you read a book? Good for you; don't give justification for your stand-point if there is none!

Hell, we had people commenting on cars of all things, and they've never driven more than mom and dad's beater. They read consumer reports and have seen pictures. Great. Whoopie. So you know what the 'best' car on the market is? As far as I know, unless you've driven many different cars, to understand an over/under steer, hard or soft suspension, etc - you're tossing out limited information, but saying it with vindication. Then you get mad when someone calls you out.

I know this post will stir up a ton of crap, but I just don't care. I'm sick of seeing unqualified or unexperienced people trying to give "expert advice" on subjects they know NOTHING about!

Let the good times roll. -J

"......most notably those not in a position to do so, are trying to give "good advice" on things they know absolutely nothing about....."

Get out of my brain, Jay.....lol......I was just thinking some of those things.....

I mean, I own my own business, and I STILL don't feel overly qualified to give advice......lol.....at least not yet........at least not until it becomes a very successful venture, and I have several years of experience under my belt. There are things that I am good at, however, like customer service and SEO....but, I have ways to PROVE that I'm good.....our company's site place #1 on Google for terms like "Deployment Supplies"......alot of search phrases that would be common to the military........but, it hasn't come shy of ALOT of work......

......and, actually, I thought his post was written rather tastefully.......I mean, a huge pitfall, to a young entrepreneur, could be someone extremely young giving advice that they really shouldn't be giving in the first place.......plus, with this internet stuff, there's a huge veil of secrecy to begin with.......so, if people do give advice, you should AT LEAST give an idea of what you have personally done to be successful in that given area, what the outcome has been, and why your advice should be taken.....just my thoughts...

I think youngentrepreneur is more of a discussion place, to bounce ideas and share info rather than an advice centre .. Is it ? what do people think of that

I think the responsibility of knowing who to listen to and whom not to, also falls on the person asking the question...

Actually, I did think about that; I'm someone that sees it all the time and decided to bring it up yet again. Dale King mentioned this a very long time ago, and it seems like it's still ever-prevelant. Just sad that people would be keen on giving advice outside of their 'area of expertise'. It's like a pig farmer telling an astronaut how to pilot the shuttle. Knowing he hasn't a clue how to do it, yet offers horrible advice while making it seem like he's done it before.

If only "qualified" people (such as people who have a track record of successfull business ventures) could give advice on this site you would BARLEY GET ANY.
There are plenty of qualified people on here that give great advice. Grad students in school for business law; experienced entrepreneurs; successful marketers; prior execs, starting and/or having built their own business; the list goes on. I'm talking about an unexperienced or qualified person saying, "Oh, to incorporate, you need to go to the town clerk's office and apply for a patent." Now, tell me what the hell is wrong with that statement?

On the car subject, I find it funny how you claim to know MORE about a 335xi, and audi A5 then I do, (which you possibly could) When you HAVENT EVEN OWNED ONE. You DID say " I can't believe these kids who don't even have there cars yet are giving insight"

YOU HAVE NEVER OWNED SUCH VEHICLES THAT WERE BEING DISCUSSED!! hahah you contradict YOURSELF! You brought up a 350 Z, which no one was even talking about?
Well let's see here, I've owned an Audi TT, so I was at liberty to give advice on how shitty Audi's are, esp with the electrical problems. Driven plenty of BMW's in my time to know enough to give advice, so yep - I guess experience could speak there too. And no, I didn't say what you quoted, so you might want to re-read that post, boy. I brought up the Z in the context of owning one, because he's in the same predicament; I own a 2-seater coupe and need to get a nicer, luxury SUV. You might want to read things before tossing them out there like a fool.

And I also agree that YE is a discussion place to bounce around ideas, but some people asking genuinely knowledge-seeking questions, and then you get the off-the-wall responses from people that have no clue what they're talking about. I also agree that it's the business owner's responsibility to filter out the BS, but sometimes it's difficult to do so. Some people reply with such conviction, and often times the business owner simply doesnt know the REAL answer, so they're lead down the wrong path.

I have never once said I'm the be-all-end-all person to ask all questions for the best responses - not even close. The original post was directed in the fashion to ask why the hell people feel the right to give shitty advice when they know nothing about the subject?

If you are asking for advice you can always ask for references or for the person giving the advice to tell you what type of experience they have on the subject. This forum was not meant to be the place for you to find the exact answer to all your questions.

You have to look at it this way.. if you were investing... would you only use one source... lets say Jim Cramer from "Mad Money" or would you call your financial adviser before investing? If your answer is that you would log on to eTrade based solely on what you saw on TV then it is only your fault when you loose money.

There is a big difference between advice and and real legal/accounting/investing/management guidance (which you have to pay for).

If your biggest concern is the difference between an Audi A5 and a BMW... what ever.. then find some place else to argue about that. If your gripe is about business then ask the poster for a reference or about their personal experiance... if they are unwilling to unable to give it... then ignore them and pay attention to the thousands of other posters on YE...

Actually, it wasn't that long ago. It was just last month in my "Be Careful" thread. I have a question for you: If you are so concerned about the bad advice being dispensed in this forum, why didn't you speak up last month when I started my thread? We had a very heated debate going on about this very topic. Everyone else spoke up. In fact, there were people coming out of the woodwork to get in on the conversation. You obviously knew about my thread, because you made reference to it in this thread. I just don't get it. Why bother speaking out after the fact?

Who are you to give advice? Your site doesn't even have page rank! I really don't see how you're qualified to determine the value of advice given by others.
This is a discussion forum; people can say what they want and are not at all obligated to give advice that you agree with.

HAHA - interesting how you just e-mailed me posing as someone interested in the business concept.
    ""Interesting concept!
Can you explain to me in a little bit more detail how I would benefit as an advertiser from your buisness?
I may be interested in being one of your first advertisers.
    Thanks,
    Frank""

The "SERVICE" email fwds to me. Nice try in e-mailing Guy also. Haha, some people amaze me.

And to answer your questions, because I'm a gentleman...
Q: Who are you to give advice?
A: Just some schmuck that's owned a few businesses in his time, to know the mistakes I've made, as well as the positive things I've done to sell and build new ones.
Q: Your site doesn't even have page rank!
A: You must be the web developer we've been looking for. The site is a simple informative quick blurb. Would we really want a high page rank right now? Absolutely not.
Q: I really don't see how you're qualified to determine the value of advice given by others.
This is a discussion forum; people can say what they want and are not at all obligated to give advice that you agree with.
A: Well, if what you say is fact; then why do you have qualms with my giving advice about what others should consider before giving advice?

    The defense rests. -J

We would love to discuss things further, and I am being sincere here not a prick, however how can you send us an email about five minutes ago asking to expand on the business concept and idea and you would like to be one of our first advertisers after a comment such as your last post?

Right now, after a falling out with some other developers, we are in the middle of sifting through a sizable amount of resumes of those who are interested on taking on this project with us. Like anything in the beginning stages, it takes time to do things right and make sure you start off on the right foot from the get go, and that is what we are doing.

And maybe the prior comments by Jay slipped past you, but he has successfully started, developed, operated and sold automotive e-commerce businesses in the past...you don't get invited to speak at SEMA if you are "not someone to give advice".
