Exclamation Getting things made from out of the country.

im starting a clothing line and wanted to know if anyone on here know where to go or who to talk to about getting products made from China.

Im starting out small with just t-shirts, but i wanna start making other stuff like hoodies, jeans, etc. and i noticed most companys have their products made over seas because of the cheap labor and material.

Right now im getting fruit of the loom t-shirts silk screened, but i want to put my own label on it instead of having the fruit of the loom one. I feel its more professional if i have my own on it.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi tdo

There are a number of companies that specialise in dealing with product manufacture abroad (specifically china). They effectively act as an intermediate between you and the relevant factories which they have a relationship with. They will sort out all the shipping details, patent application, import issues etc. for you and obviously take a small fee for doing all this for you.

When I was dealing with one of these companies even with the associated fees the product was still considerably cheaper (per unit) than using local wholesalers. The only thing to consider is that you generally have to buy 'a lot' of units i.e. several pallet loads up to a shipping container full of them so you do need to consider this as well as storage issues.

I am based in the UK so some of this may not be relevant or different depending on where you are from

Hope this helps

Peter

Hi tdo

The cost per unit varied depending on how many units of the product you wanted to have produced and shipped. If I remember correctly the smallest shipment size came in at around 200 odd units at 50% of retail price and was on par with what I could get from local wholesalers. For larger numbers the cost per unit dropped to the region of 30-40% retail price. These figures are only rough estimates as I don't have any of the info to hand at the moment. The company called itself a 'product development and sourcing company'. A number come up if you search on google for this term.

If you want the name of the company i had dealings with then PM and I will dig out the website for you.
