Getting a tax id/business licence?

I'm from NY and want to start my own retail type store, but you need a tax id and/or business licence to prove your a legit business. I can't find where I need to register or how to go about it.

Any help is appreciated..thanks

IRS form SS-4. Do a search for SS-4 on irs.gov, it is free and can be filled out online. You will also need to register with your state.
Most reputable wholesalers now require more than a Federal Tax ID to do business now.

^^ Josh correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you had to pay to register for one... am I right or wrong?

Don't need to pay to get an FEIN. It is free, relatively easy and quick to fill out the SS-4 online.

I say relatively easy because some questions on the form are complex, but the IRS provides a good instruction sheet on the form. Read the instruction sheet before filling it out, it will save you a lot of time so you don't get a letter from the IRS in a few weeks saying your application was denied.

Don't fret on the complexity or costs. That was one of my biggest worries going into this.

I was under the impression that start up costs (as far as registering and what not) would be costly.

Alas, it was quick, relatively easy and FAST. And I think it was free (I live in Michigan though.)
