    Getting a real job.

I am a Junior in college, the past year I have pretty much thrown out the idea of ever getting a real job. Why? B/c I can make the same money doing 10% of the work. But, recently I have started to realize how boring, lonely it may be to follow this path, i communicate via telephone and online only, and work out of my apartment. Although I could not see myself ever shutting down my personal businesses, I have been considering aiming to get a real job just so i am not stuck in my house/office, all day.
So, to all those who are working for a corporation or whatever, is my reasoning valid? Once I graduate from college, I could easily move to somewhere comfortable, most likely not far. continue my current businesses and start the new ones. But, i am not a very social person, such that I do not seek social contact. I feel a job will give me the social contact I need. But, maybe I would be better off joining a country club or something. I dont know.

Most likely im am blinded to the fact that having a job will take away much of any free time I would wish to have, especially if I am running businesses on the side..

You must socialize on college campus though right?

Anyway, I don't think you should worry about it right now. Wait til you graduate college and then decide whether you want to get a job or not. Right now I would concentrate on my studies and a home business because it doesn't take up a lot of study time. You may also want to consider an internship.

A job is always a good idea to gain knowledge and experience that you cannot get from a textbook.

Also, you don't need a job to leave your house. Eventually, you can even start your own business and get an office, hire employees, etc. Easier said than done of course.

Country clubs are great for socialization and networking. I try to go play golf 2-3 times a month during the summer. It's great to get away from my desk and I also get to meet potential clients.

I don't know so much about getting a job to socialize. Yes, socialization is a part of any organization. I'm in the Air Force and it's a massive social organization. Not only is a job important in terms that RL described, but also for networking purposes. You gain a lot of 'real world' experience by being out there and getting your hands dirty w/ different facets and aspects of the job you're interested in... But it's not always what you know... It's WHO you know that matters many times in life. I can guarantee that just because "Person A" knows an assignment to Hawaii is open, doesnt mean he will get it. If "Person B", happens to know the assignment officer, who do you think is more likely to get that sweet assignment to Hawaii? See what I'm getting at?

RL is right... You still have time. I say keep with the businesses until you're done w/ college, then shoot for a nice job somewhere. Keep the business(es) afloat for a bit, see how you like the job routine, and who knows? Maybe you'll meet a few good fellas (or ladies) that can help to expand your current operations.

Well, you would think at a college with 50k students I would be very social, but recently a relationship of mine ended, an exclusive relationship that I had been in for 4+ years. Im not a social person, so i really had all my eggs in one basket, and now im kinda starting over. But, that is aside the point..

I will definately be doing an internship next summer, its basically assumed for the business school. So i guess that will help me decide.

I suppose there is so much unknown at this point its not worth my time to think about it.

What I think I really need is a business partner, i think this would help me set goals, and give a little more flavor to business besides just making money, bcuz i am learning very quickly money is not going to make me happy. However, I hate working with other people, aside from my dad, I dont trust anyone to help run my businesses, and I dont want to split the profits from my hard work.

I thought the same thing - for about 30 seconds.

Then I realized that I'd rather work 4 hours a day for myself, make the same money as if I worked 10 for someone else, and take the extra six hours and go meet people on my terms, where I wanted to meet them.

This is basically where i stood for a good while, but im having a little trouble with the meeting people aspect. Also, my A/C stopped working today, its 90F in my room, i wouldnt mind putting in some overtime at a cool office.

The only way to make real money is to get people to work for you. Leverage their time to make you more money. Everyone is willing to sell themselves cheaper for security. If you have the work then you might as well build a money producing teams. Plus, then you can socialize with your employees...to an extent anyways.

I've thought the same thing before. I remember my last job was really fun with a lot of cool people, some days it was like not even going to work, you were just hanging out with friends. But IMO going to school is better for this.

Ya, but I hate school, I would rather punch my wall than study, although ive always been a good student I getting burnt out with all this useless knowledge. But what you just said means a ton to me... And the thought I just had is, because I am making a living with my own businesses I can be really selective in which jobs I choose if I do decide to get a real job. Because the bread and butter is still going to be working for me. So maybe if I pick the right job, it will be fun, and if i dont like it, i can leave. But, im glad to hear you enjoyed going to work, thats how it should be

These are some very powerful, very true statements. I have watched basically everyone in my life sell themselves for that "security."

When I started my company, and in the rough spots that ensued, I can't tell you how many times I've heard "Just get a real job" (whatever a real job is supposed to be), especially from my sister. Now she's lost yet another job, and I'm doing better than ever.

Anyway, pboychuk, I honestly don't understand where your head is, my friend. People would KILL for a lifestyle with plenty of free time, selective jobs, etc., especially if it matched their current income level.

If meeting people is difficult for you, I understand, a lot of people feel that way. But you will find that there is a lot more "opportunity" out there if you set your own lifestyle and have plenty of free time. Don't sell yourself short and work for someone else JUST to meet people. If having a regular job can benefit you in some other way at this point, that's great, but otherwise, don't do it.

Have you thought about getting a start in real estate? Real Estate will get you out and about plus will get you networking with other investors, sounds exactly what your looking for. You want to move money into a new sector, get out of the office more, and make new relationships.
