Adwords can turn into a very expensive excercise but if used correctly can be very good tool to promote sites !!! you can add your site here Free Ads it only takes 60 seconds to join and its free.
Concentrate on building quality backlinks and add your website details to your signature on this forum and as many as you can.
I hate to dish out huge secrets like this on a public forum, but for the sake of edification of all who read and use this tool, you will get traffic.. lots of traffic, if done right.
I will warn you though, you have to be smart about how you use the tool I'm about to share with you. It's not a "no brainier", if you will, but it is grossly effective. I've got documented results of 500% increase in traffic and a conversion rate of 50%! Yea, I know, you don't see those numbers anywhere. It's not "just the tool", but how it's used that counts.
I will also warn you that anything "free" takes time, that's the trade off, you can actually pay for an upgrade to exchange the long time for faster results, but it is 100% absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt free!
Ok, so what the heck is this thing, right?

If you want the golden strategy to accompany this, just get in touch with me via Skype (JoshuaAJones) and I'll fill you in. I will not share it through PM, nor will I type it out anywhere on a free site. The tool is 100% free, but the strategy will be shared with only those that take enough action to call me up
There's lots of other things you can do to get free traffic, but this has been the very best tool for free traffic I've ever used.
Disclaimer: FREE means there is no cost to use the tool, that does not mean it won't cost you time and energy. This tool only applies to MySpace, the worlds greatest viral marketing platform.

I wonder if there are other free ways to generate traffic
their are hundreds if not thousands of ways to generating traffic. from putting your link on the bottom of each of your posts and e-mails to producing a superior product and gaining customer referrals.
I know you're looking free traffic, which can be done - but think about other ways you can spend that AdWords money. You can hire a freelance SEO expert to enhance your site's rating. You can bring on an SEO or web development expert for equity, or you can use some other means to bring traffic. Free traffic takes a lot of time, so unless you have hours to spend writing ad copy, perfecting it, placing links, etc - you're going to spend a lot of time doing free advertising and less time running the business.

If traffic coming in from mobile users in a geo-specific area is desirable, consider using QR codes or bluetooth messaging.
QR Codes are beginning to come into their own in metropolitan areas, and bluetooth messages work well in pretty much any shopping mall, particularly for a techno oriented and/or younger crowd.

As with hiring anyone to do anything for you, you should exercise caution, ask for examples of past work, percentage of traffic and/or sales increases attributed to their SEO work, etc. Any reputable SEO expert should be able to provide this in abundance.
You can use eLance or the like to browse SEO providers.

The following are some ways to increase web traffic:
- Write articles and post them to a couple of popular article directories (e.g., Ezinearticles.com). It is best if you post a unique article to
each article directory.
- Submit your work to ezines, magazines, newspapers, and any "information outlet."
- Expand your website's content with a special focus on creating a blog.
- Post blog entries as often as possible (I need to increase the frequency of my posts) and please respond when visitors post comments.
- Blog entries/articles should also be posted on social marketing sites such as Del.ichio.us and Digg.
- Contribute to forums.
- Create "opt-in" lists by setting up a free newsletter or giving away a free e-book. It would be great if you can launch a "viral marketing" campaign -- easier said than done.
- Learn more about search engine optimization and utilize the recommended strategies.
Of course, I wish you luck as your website becomes more prominent.

Hi Scott,
Your point is valid. Traffic that is not targeted may prove meaningless. (Yes, there is a lot more to gaining traffic than SEO.) In the same vein, high traffic without conversion will not yield desired results.
As advertising and marketing expand, business owners have to constantly evaluate their website, and try to see it from a prospective client's point of view.
