    Game Programming

    Hi,

Just interested to know what some online MMORPG's are created. The prime example would be Runescape.

Just interested in learning what type of programming they used?

    They use Java.

I used to mess around with their game client, that's how i learned the basics of Java.

Just search for Runescape private servers and you should come up with something.

Hmm , I asked the question since I am interested in learning Java , and eventually creating a small-scaled game. Obviously less than 1% of the size of runescape.

Would I only need to learn java , to create a small-scaped game like runescape?

Or is their more programming languages I would need?

It's mainly java, but you would probably also have to set up some kind of web site/service to run it on. It depends what you what its capabilities to be really.

Runescape is all java, it uses a Java client and java server as far as I know.

You can really use anything you want to make a mini mmo like that. I made one in PHP using google maps as the playing field a while back.

More important then learning java would be learning the basics of socket communication and general theory behind creating a game.... its quite complicated to make a good game.

    Good luck tho

If you want to build a good game, learning Java would be the start. I would also suggest picking up a copy of Internetworking with TCP/IP and also Game Programming Magazine is a good source.

Then there is of course Nehe's Game Programming site, part of the GameDev community.

An often forgotten part of making a game is the graphics. Make sure you have someone who can make good graphics. Very important is a line in the artwork, so that all images have the same look to them.

EDIT: As a side note, most interesting games are still programmed in either C or C++. Java can be a good choice though. And also remember that it is VERY hard to make a good game. I know from experience since I programmed a couple of game engines for fun in several languages (C, C++ and C#), although I never finished them (I considered them learning projects and thus had no need to finish them).

Last thing: making a program is only 20% of the work. Finishing it (i.e. making it work so that users actually enjoy the program/game) is the other 80%, you have to be ready to make a long haul at this or it will fail. Just a warning
