For Free Or Not For Free, That Is The Question

When I started out freelancing, I found I made a huge mistake... giving certain things away for free. I was confusing the concept of loss leading with free services. I now realize that the client values you more when they are paying for your services and that offering freebies (not added value) usually leads to disaster.

What are your thoughts on doing work for free vs. a reduced rate to try to win new clients or establish a reputation?

I think it depends. If you give away freebies your customers will either think its very generous or try to take advantage of you. But if you charge for EVERYTHING they will most likely get annoyed and just not choose your service again.

What are some of the things you were giving away for free that you thought were hurting your business?
