What you have to remember is that we are still deep in a recession albeit it green shoots are starting to show but it will take a long time for clients to start spending again back to how it was a few years back.

Had you thought about while its slow about making a few sites for yourself in a few niche sectors to spread the reliance on just doing sites for other people, its just a thought but i have mine spread across many sectors so that if one slows down in theory the others keep some form of revenue coming in.

The thing is you have the abilty to produce far superior sites that most people have access to but the hardest part i would think is the niche bit i dont think you can go wrong with a subject about credit or how to build it back peoples credit back up again.People may well be skint but they do find the money some how to prchase a eboo on that topic.

Find a good domain and you should be able to put a decent site and have it up and running i a very short time duration selling the ebook and with adsense or clickbank products.

    Just a thought

You should check out my site mymuto.com. Theres a handful of graphic design gigs if you want to make some quick cash. Also, if you're considering putting up your own site, like Mega B suggested, you can find some great developers on the site as well. Good luck!

    Forget blaming the economy.

Think about how you can improve your lead generation instead.

Marketing - what do you do ?
Do you follow up with old customers at least by e-mail?
Where do most of your clients usually come from?
What kind of SERP positions do you have for your targeted keywords on that PR3 site of yours?
Any kind of lead capture mechanism on your company page to turn visitors into prospects and prospects into customers? This is super easy to do with a cheap autoresponder service and it will pay for itself 100x over.

Hmm, I think to say 'forget blaming the economy' is turning a blind eye on an all too important factor. Perhaps not all the blame can be pointed to the state of the economy and so on but to disregard it completely would be a little ignorant in my opinion.

I do believe however you are right in some respects; marketing, following up and clients to check for any work they may need doing and so on but as the OP states, he's finding it hard for the first time in years, which would imply that business was booming prior to the downfall.

Either way, with the economy getting better and consumers re-asserting their trust into markets, I believe we'll see an increase in sales being generated - especially on the web. It's just a matter of time.

Don't worry about the things you can't control.

Unless the dollar bottomed out and people were shooting each other in the street for food I wouldn't pay much attention to it.

Yes but we still have to take in to account the effect it has on business and how we can change to meet the changing demands of the consumer surely?

What should a web designer do differently in a bad economy compared to a good economy to meet the changing demands of the consumer?
