Finding a job

Hey everyone,

It's great to find a site like this, so maybe you guys could help me out here.
I just got my Bachelor of Computer Science degree, I tried looking for jobs but with no success really. Since it was the "can't find a job without experience, can't get experience without a job" hole... Im thinking about handing out my resumes to companies, saying that I'll work maybe the first 2 weeks without pay, and if I show that Im good enough for the employer I would get a job? Do you think employers would accept this? I live in Australia by the way...

It's worth a shot. Try everything and don't slow up for a bit.

Im not sure if Monster.com is available in Australia but when I was in the position that you're in now, all I did was post me resume and I got tons of calls and emails.

Some were good and some were bad, but at least I got calls.

More importantly, while you wait, there are tons of ways to start generating a little money right here in this forum. Most require no start up funds at all.

Good luck and much success.

BTW... networking is key. Don't be afraid to step outside and meet new people. Coffee shops and bookstores are my favorite.

as a computer scientist I learned to bank not on what I learned in school, what I learned on my own. If you really want to get experience and noone is giving you a job, you may want to consider creating your own projects to practice so you can gain some experience.

The reality is employers just want you to get the job done. Some may play it dimplomatic and tell you to take your time, but deep down, they all want to get the most out of you in the shortest amount of time possible.

Before I graduated from school I was already working in the field for the school, developing things from concepts I had learned on my own and getting paid a considerable amount more than the average folks at the time.

Touch position to be in your shoes, but if you are go getter I would assume that you can work on many side projects, document every bit of it so when you go for that interview, you can show your work and not just tell.

Hey everyone

Thank you for the replies, thank you Ventor for the networking advice, I like it! Thanks jgarifuna.

However, back to the sending out resumes about working for 2 weeks without pay, is it legal to work at a company without any pay for 2 weeks? Once the company hire me, are they bound to pay me legally, or should we sign an agreement stating that I voluntarily deicided to work the first two weeks without pay.

Yeah just say you'll go in for a 2- week trial, I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem with it.

I strongly suggest completing some projects of your own, especially for computer science, employers want to see that you have a strong interest in what you do
