There are so many markets that are profitable at the moment and in the future, to see what is hot right now you can try using tools like Google Trends.
Keep your eyes and ears open for example take note what Oprah talks about as these markets or products usually become pretty popular after Oprah has spoken about them.
Just like Akula says also notice what venture captialist are investing in at the moent.

The green energy movement is pretty big right now and will only get better, but if you want markets that are ALWAYS GROWING also known as evergreen markets are Health, Relationships and money. These are the 3 main areas people want to master, need help, want to improve, etc

    I hope this helps

Become a member on indusry forums that interest you. Insiders will know whats going on, and what will happen before the mass media. Usually by the time the mass media reports something, the trend is almost over. But keeping up with the news might give you insight into things that might be the next big trend, and maybe give you ideas to start your own trend. As they say "Make waves, don't follow them" .

I like the theory behind make waves instead of just riding them. There is a TV show called family fued. They give the contestant a question and they have to guess how the population would respond to this. If you find you can successfully come up with the best responses and also guess pretty well how many responded to each then you probably have a pretty good feel for how people are thinking and feeling. If you have this gift good chance your business ideas will have merit and you should trust them. My personnal interest right now deals with leisure time and entertainment, even in bad times folks want to feel good, just make it affordable and their is a good chance you will be developing lifetime clients. Stone mentioned Google Trends, and that's one of the better tools you can use (though I have trouble getting truly useful/actionable information out of it). Mckinsey also has a newsletter that you can sign up for that has good information about different market growths. You can sign up for free, and get it through an email.

Just keep your ear to the ground. Check Google News, and any financial newspapers. You will find an abundance of information from these sources
