Does anyone know anything about exporting too Japan from the US? I have been told that if they make a similar product to the one you are wanting to import in to Japan they will not let you unless you are a citizen of Japan. Is this true?

No. Every country has a Japanese trade association and you should start your process there (JETRO in the UK). They facilitate everything for you, from getting relevant contacts, to learning about the realities/etiquete of doing business in Japan and to arranging meetings, travel and stay whilst in Japan.

They have set-ups that are the envy of the world, and they even provide you with office space in their buildings to conduct meetings with senior staff from Japanese companies.
