Expanding portfolio through charities?

I am a member of a UK charity as a cadet, I opened a website about 1.5 years ago to try making some cash, offering a forum etc.
It didnt work so I then turned it into a blog that I never updated, and currently its as a php nuke thing.

I am thinking about expanding my portfolio in offering information on the groups of cadets in the UK. Sea Air and Army. It will be as a blog, but I have no money on me to hold and host this for ever, but if I can use their servers I wouldnt need to advertise.

Anyway if I open this up I will need some ads on the site, what isnt the best thing on charity sites. But it will build up a portfolio for myself even with adverts on it.

What do you think is the best thing and is it a good way to expand a business/design portfolio by doing free sites for charities.
