    eBay raises their fees AGAIN!

eBay is raising their fees on vehicle sales!
August 20, 2008 in Auto Auctions

A lot of my clients sell cars online so this is important information!

Hello everyone…This is Rob Chesney, Vice President of eBay Motors. I’d like to share some news regarding seller fee changes that we’re making to the eBay Motors Vehicles marketplace.

Effective September 2, 2008, we’re lowering the Insertion Fees for all vehicle Auction-style and Fixed Price listings and will be increasing the Successful Listing Fee. Here are the details:

Ebay loves to lower that insertion fee and they love to raise the listing fee way high. Ebay is a joke for a seller. Im not sure what the previous fee was. But atleast when you sell a car, your getting some good money. Rather than selling something for two dollars.

The fees were $40 to list and $40 when your reserve is met = $80

Now $20 to list and $100 when your reserve is met = $120
    *This is the volume pricing..

Thats a fn 50% fee increase!

You would think someone else would be able to compete or be better than Ebay, with the fees going up all the time by now.

Craigslist is a competitor to Ebay. In addition, Ebay has a lot of competition overseas. Ebay has realized that a lot of their users don't prefer auction style selling anymore and they are moving their fee structure to benefit the "buy it now" feature to compete more closely with retailers like Amazon.com.

I guess they should re-word what I said.

They have limited competition to their on line auction system in certain markets. The US and Australia are examples of this. They are the industry leader in direct to the public on line auto auctions. My client Capital Auto Auction has no other outlet for this service at the level in which eBay provides it. Because of this they are just going to have to pay the new fees. This is how eBay can get away with changing their vehicle fees with out much repercussion.

For selling vehicles you could do autotrader.com. I don't think there is a fee for it.

Monopolies are Bad Things. Everybody from Adam Smith on has said so. With a monopoly, the seller charges whatever he feels like charging, and the buyer has no choice except to pay. Ebay is mostly useless anyway, a lot of the stuff on there is just junk, and way overpriced junk at that. It's so big that most people never get a single bid on what they're selling unless it's so unique that it's a high demand one of a kind item. Ebay is America's Garage Sale, a place where everything is useless, worn, and way overpriced. I suspect that the Ebay Motors section has some good deals though, but the bulk of the site is just crap. I've been simply giving my outdated crap to thrift stores instead of trying Ebay. I would recommend using Craigslist, although it has prohibitions on long distance selling because of ubiquitous Nigerian scammers saying "I will buy your car and send you a cashier's check for double, and you will wire back the remainder". We all know how that scam runs.

Ebay is going to completely destroy themselves and niche sites are going to take over their business. While no one-stop auction site will ever compete with them, sites focused around niche categories will compete and can take away a lot of their business.

I do not agree that everything on eBay is junk... My client sells 10-20 cars a week on their site and has had great success in doing so. Selling on eBay is completely different then Craigslist. Craigslist is a person to person sales platform.. meaning you advertise.. people contact you.. then you sell... eBay is an auction system whereby people can bid and buy without ever talking directly to the seller. They have different marketing appeals.

EBay pushes PayPal on customers - Top Stocks Blog: Talk about the most noteworthy stocks in the market each day – MSN Money

Guess what, they're STILL trying to force people to use Paypal! My parents recently had a bank account connected to Paypal emptied by an unknown hacker. They assume that the hacker got past Paypal's notoriously bad security and emptied the account. I recently had somebody demand to be paid with Paypal, so I had to open an account. After he gets paid the account will be closed. I don't trust Paypal's security. When I tried to re-sign up with Paypal it said that my email address was in use. When I went to log in using that email address it wouldn't let me. I had to sign up using a Hotmail address I had. Ebay and Paypal are notorious for their nonexistent customer service. You can't reach them by email. You can't reach them by phone. You just get prerecorded messages telling you that nothing is wrong. All they want is to take your money. They are a monopoly, and love it. I think they're skating on thin ice.
