One rule...comfort zones. Comfort zones are about the amount of money the avrage consumer is happy to spend on eBay without giving their purchase much thought. This is typically £10 ( in the US is even lower seeing as $10 is worth less than £10) So if you are able to get large quantities or items (or use dropshipping) that you can sell for less than $/£10 then you should be successful providing you sell large enough quantities (e.g. low-end consumer electronics like budget mp3 players, gadgets, books etc. The other extreme is comfort zone disposition, there is no explanation to it but this is how it is. This is where you sell items are relatively high prices such as TV's, Laptops, Cars and other high-end electrical goods, as long as your price is marginally cheaper than the high st. you should be successful.

The inbetween is called the deadzone for products priced between £/$10 and 200. In order to sell successfully in this are your product must be in great demand and products over the 100 range are the hardest unless you find a really great product such as the Ipod or used consoles.

Thats just a bit of advice from me personally based on my own experience, I am sure many 'How to be successful on eBay' books will say otherwise where they tell you that ebooks are the 'hip thing' even though you will only make about 40 cents per unit sale.

I've had success buying designer clothes (Lacoste,Banana Republic) at wholesale prices, then reselling them -- usually with a 200% profit. But the whole process seems labor-intensive.

I wonder if selling information products would work? I know there is a lot of junk info products on eBay, so a legitimate product may not get the attention it deserves. :-(
