Drop Shipping Experiences

I wanted to know your experiences with drop shippers..

what company did you use?
what were you selling?
what were the costs?

and is it worth it? I've seen other posts that are against drop shippers.... then how do you set up an ecommerce site without any inventory?

I've been dropshipping for a bit now, but I have to say you really have to buy in bulk to make a killing. The margins for dropshipping don't really make it worth it.

i was reading a book the other day at Hastings, I believe it was "What to Sell on ebay and where to get it". The chapter on wholesale and dropshipping was mainy trying to tell you almost any wholesale site you find in a google search or wherever is most likely not profitable, if so its very little and to get real profitable wholesale deals you need to look in the small book that usually comes with the product and find where it is manufactured. Then call or email them discussing if they would sell you a wholesale or dropship for you.
I have not done this the method however its just what i read. But it seems like a good idea.

I agree with most. Dropshipping is hardly worth the effort. Find a product that you can source locally (especially if there is a factory of some sort near you). You can probably provide lower prices than retail and fit a niche that only sellers in your area will be able to enter.

Before starting up in business for a living, i dabbled in dropshipping.

Instead of buying stupid lists and selling on daft places such as ebay, I searched and searched and contacted hundreds of companies and manufacturers asking if they would consider dropshipping.

Out of the ones that replied, I chose 3 or 4 to use on a permanent basis and made good money.
I know own a successful business selling at retail prices and, because of history with suppliers & manufacturers, I am able to offer a dropship service too!

Too many people expect a miracle overnight. You need to work hard at it.
I started by making very little profit but kept at it and it has paid off.

And stop relying on places such as Ebay!

Not entirely true.

Most true wholesale companies such as mine require the following.

- Handling charge of 1.00 each.
-You can also setup your own UPS account to be charged when shipping. ( Big ecommerce retailers such as Costco.com do this.

What you should expect,

45-55 point margin with a 2-5% kicker for CUMULATIVE volume. In other wors once you hit 500 units you should recive the discount WITHOUT having to purchase 500 pieces at once.

Hey. look into our products. Then take it as a model for negotiating with companies willing to drop ship. The terms are there you just have to be firm in wanting it.

Actually, I'm in the dropshipping business. I worked out a deal to send designs to my Chinese manufacturer in exchange for the products to be developed without any initial cost...plus they will ship it to the U.S. for free and store it in their warehouse. This was all made possible by the uniqueness of my product.

This is the only time you will ever have consistent success with dropshipping.

Go directly to the source, the manufacturer (many times this isn't possible) or a very reputable product specifc wholesaler.

They will give you the best service AND the best prices, everytime.

Messing with some dorky middleman website spouting the word dropship every other sentence will a) waste money and b) waste time.

I agree what you say here. No matter how regretful you view dropshipers, we still try to work hard and cooperate with partners. if you are experient resellers, you should know how to choose your suppliers, right?
