Driving Traffic to my wife's jewelry website?

I was wondering what some good suggestions would be to increase traffic to my wife's custom jewelry website. We're getting some hits every month, thanks to her handing out her business cards at her craft shows.

Her business has been great from June to Dec. when she has shows, we're looking to add internet sales from Jan-May.

She promotes the healing energy of her gemstones, and it's a very nice product that is also inexpensive. Would you suggest some insightful blogging posts about the healing energy each week and get people to subscribe to the blog? We could invest some money into advertising the site, but we don't want to put it somewhere that wont pay off. I've heard good and bad about Google Adwords. Her search engine position is only good when you put the title of her business in Songbird Gems. If you put "gemstone jewelry, gemstone bracelets, or anything of that nature, then she's not on there....

Any suggestions would be helpful. Because I haven't made 5 posts yet on here, I can't provide the link, but if you google "Songbird Gems", you can find it at the top

Thanks!!!

Please do a search for this on the boards. There are many threads about this.

However a good start is to submit your site to some good web directories, write article sabout the site, and start a ad campaign.

Google Adwords is good as you have total control over your budget. But, this isn't a one off payment. The search traffic from this will disappear as soon as you stop paying.

It might be more effective to read some Search Engine Optimisation techniques, if you or your wife are technically inclined. Otherwise, you could hire a professional. This way, you'd pay up front, but it would pay off for months. Search Engine Optimisation would help to focus the site for searches such as "gemstone jewelry". I do this professionally if you'd like more information - My Search Engine services

Nick, how do I do this, when my wife's aunt built the site for us, and has control of everything? She's extremely busy, and we don't want to bug her for small stuff because she did the site for free.

Thanks,

Doug

Ah, I've run into this problem before... Some people very well meaning people often create a website, perhaps as a favour, thinking it won't require upkeep. But when it comes to doing some real online business, you should be able to update and maintain that site.

As a start, I could recommend some careful mediation with the sites creator. If you could just get the FTP login, password and host details, you'd be able to download the site, change parts of it, and update it appropriately.

Yeah, I would recommend reading some similar threads on here. Familiarize yourself with online marketing a bit more... Particularly SEO.

Then get the FTP login detail, then if you have an HTML editor like FrontPage (most likely as it comes with Microsoft Office) installed you may be able to make some minor, but effective changes yourself.

Once you get going we can give you some more advice along the way.

Good Luck.
