"Doing Business As" vs. "Fictitious Business Name" ...what's the difference?

Is there a difference? Because on sites like LegalZoom.com, they charge you $99 to file a DBA (+ state fees), but on my county website, it says nothing about a DBA. It only mentions "Fictitious Business Names" which cost $25. If they're the same thing, seems like Legal Zoom has a pretty huge profit margin (especially considering their price doesn't even include the state fees).

Are they two words for the same thing, or are they different?

Any information is appreciated.

Ficticious business name, doing business as, assumed name, etc. all the same.

^ Thanks. If you don't mind, could you post a link or anything where it officially says this?

Hooman,

A DBA and a fictitious name are synonymous. You hit the nail on the head with LegalZoom. Why are their profit margins so high? Because the majority of young entrepreneurs out there don't know the first thing about the law. They're willing to pay hundreds of dollars extra to have someone else fill out a simple, 5-minute form for them, for example, to register an LLC.

^ Hey thanks for confirming that. I just couldn't figure out why there was such a big discrepancy in the fees. I'll go ahead and file it at my county office. Yeah, I'm really thankful for this forum
