Exclamation Do You Work With Family Members?

For years, I resisted hiring family members to work in my various businesses, because I'd heard the horror stories about working with your family.

Well last year, I finally gave in and hired my sister to do my books, and I couldn't be happier. She's a conscientious and hard worker and we get along beautifully.

What about you? Do you or have you ever worked with members of your family? How did it work out?

I currently don't work with any of my family members, but I have put my young brother through college, earning a BS in economics and plan to put him in an MBA program either at the Wharton or HBS next year.

I am also putting my other family members through college, my goal is help educate them, so that one day they can join us and help build an empire.

I can't think of anything better than working with members of my family. Just the though of seeing them each day especially at work makes my heart pound in excitement.

In order for things to workout, certain rules and understandings must be set and initiated from the very beginning of the work.

I started a company with my sister. We ran it great. When it started to fail she absolutely could not stop criticizing my decisions to my parents or at family gatherings and it hurt our relationship and my relationship with my parents and in the end I did not pursue several hundred $$ she owed me.

    That reason enough to beware?

I currently work for my family. I work with my brother, father, and mother. It works but I can't exactly say that I like it!

I try getting ideas together with my Father, he normally argues with me..and so I have to fire back, and the cycle continues..we normally work it out though.

    Thank you, Dale.

It's going good so far. There's another really good article coming out this week in a different newspaper. It's getting media attention. Thanks again!

No problem as long as we know how to deal with it. We should understand that work is work and we should stick with the company rules and all. No favoritism, no special treatment.

Outside the office or the company, we do things as we used to do with a family member.

I cant say i like working with family members. Of course this cannot be the same to all. I guess it all depends whether they can differentiate between work and others. In my case they can't, and surprisingly small petty stuffs got in a way in my days working together with them. So I won't be going that path again. But if your family member can work well with you, they will be one of your best assets. Too bad mine didn't work.
