Do Industrial Engineers usually get a royalty?

Hello everyone, here's my situation. I am starting a company that has an engineer to build the product. He said that industry standard is that businesses give the engineers a royalty off the profits above the pay that they define. He sees the potential and I can understand him. Nevertheless, I am not certain on how to arrange this situation as far as the percentage goes. What is the normal % for somebody that is not an investor? Should I tell him to suck it or is it usual for new products?

They don't do that at the company I work for. But hey are all Mechanical and Electrical engineers, we don't have any Industrial engineers.
